Sir Alex Ferguson – Manchester United – Football

Sir Alex Ferguson is famous for being the best manager of all time. He used his organisation, communication and problem solving to win every competition he managed in. This lead to his team dominating the world for certain seasons. He used his good organisation skills to rest his key players before big games so they would be fresh for them. An example of him using problem solving was in 2011 when he came second in the champions league with not the best team. He did this by playing to the teams strengths and hiding their weak spots so his opposition couldn’t break his team down.

Organisation;

Sir Alex Ferguson showed good organisation when his team were losing, an example of this is when in games he was losing he would substitute a player on who he knew would make a difference. This was later nicknamed ‘fergie time’ because of how often it happened.

Communication;

Before after and during the game Sir Alex Ferguson would be telling his team what to do and how to do it, and because he could easily communicate with anyone on his team he was able to tell them what they were doing wrong and correct it so his players would be more effective.

Problem Solving;

An example of Sir Alex Ferguson having good problem solving skills is when he joined Manchester United. He joined the club when they weren’t a title contending team and fighting relegation. Within twenty years he made Manchester United the biggest club in world football and one of the most successful clubs ever, he did this by problem solving. An example of this is he bought up and coming football stars before anyone knew about them and turned them into world class players with his help. The biggest example of a player he has done this with is Cristiano Ronaldo, he turned Ronaldo into the best football player in the world and Ronaldo has said most of his success is because of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Health And Safety;

Sir Alex Ferguson had to make sure his players stayed healthy and safe if he wanted them to be successful so, he made sure all his players were in the gym everyday and were eating healthy, he also watched over everyone in training and tried to see if anyone had anything wrong with them and if they did he wouldn’t allow them to play until they recovered.

Equal Opportunities;

Sir Alex Ferguson is famous for giving young and upcoming footballers game time. This gave players the confidence and drive to try and get in the first team because they knew they would get the chance if they kept pushing.

Professional Standards;

In his 26 year long career at united he always stayed professional even when he didn’t want to. He was professional in his losses and always thanked the fans for supporting no matter what.

Following The Rules;

Sir Alex Ferguson never broke the rules in his long career as a football manager. He always won fairly and never insisted to his players that they should break the rules.

Leadership;

Sir Alex Ferguson was a great leader and lead his team to a lot of success in his time of managing. He used his leadership skills to prove they always had a chance of winning and got his team to follow him no matter what.

Role Model;

Sir Alex Ferguson is the perfect example of a good role model in coaching, every player who has ever played under him including the greats have said they look up to him and he is the best manager they have ever played for. This is especially true for Cristiano Ronaldo because Sir Alex Ferguson gave him the tips to becoming arguably the greatest footballer of all time and to this day Cristiano Ronaldo still called Sir Alex Ferguson his ‘Boss’.

Trainer;

An example of Sir Alex Ferguson being a good trainer is with Cristiano Ronaldo, in 2003 an incomplete Cristiano Ronaldo came to Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson nurtured him into a great player whilst he was playing under him. He trained his physically and mentally so he would become a great player and even Cristiano Ronaldo has said that Sir Alex Ferguson has changed his life.

Friend;

Even after 8 years of retirement for Sir Alex Ferguson he still talks to the players he managed and has a relationship with them. This is key to being a good manager because you want your players to be open with you and not scared. He still supports all the players he managed to this day and examples of this is going to every Cristiano Ronaldo game he can and the say for Wayne Rooney.

Steve Kerr – Golden State Warriors – Basketball

Steve Kerr took the golden state warriors from an average team at best to the best team in the NBA. He did this by focusing on the teams strength which was three point shooting, he had knowledge of three point shooting because in his career as a NBA player his main strength was also three point shooting. By doing this he has won the championship three times in four years and got to the NBA finals four times in a row. He has shown his problem solving skills in overcoming arguably the best player of all time three out of four times in the finals of the NBA and has shown to be a role model to his players by not getting into any drama all his career.

Organisation;

Steve Kerr sets up his team so they have the highest chance of winning, an example of this is how he has good players on the bench and on the court at the same time so when a certain player gets tired he can sub him off and use another good player. This has led the Golden State Warriors to have a winning record every year Steve Kerr had been managing them.

Communication;

Steve Kerr’s communication skills are great because in the time outs he explains to his team what they should do to win the game and tell them where they are struggling and how to fix it. This is known to work because whenever he calls a timeout his team get refreshed and come back onto the court stronger and faster.

Problem Solving;

In the 2017 championship finals Steve Kerr had to explain to his team how they were going to stop arguably the greatest player of all time Lebron James. By showing his team they could do it and how to do it, they went on to win the final. This shows Steve Kerr has great problem solving skills and can overcome any player his team has to face.

Health and Safety;

Steve Kerr always allows his players to rest if they feel like their body is hurt or if they have an injury. If he has concern about a players health then he will tell them to see the team specialist and make sure they are fit.

Equal Opportunities;

Even thought Steve Kerr had a championship team he still played the rookie in the team Jordan Bell who was only 22 years old, by doing this Jordan Bell became a key player in the teams play and made them a better team overall. By giving his young players opportunities to play it helps the team overall and makes the team stronger.

Processional Standards;

In loss or win Steve Kerr always is respectful to his opponents. This is a key role in being a manager because sport is all about respect for others. Even though Steve Kerr manages the best team in the NBA he is still humble and grateful for everything his team and the NBA has done for him.

Following The Rules;

Steve Kerr has never been given a technical (foul) for saying/doing anything wrong, he sometimes may be annoyed at the decision but he stays calm and respects the assistants choice.

Leadership;

Steve Kerr manages the best shooter of all time and arguably the best scorer of all time, even thought he has big names to manage he still inspires them and his whole team and leads them to success every year. He pays respect to all his players and brings the best out in them. He has lead his team to believe that they are the best team in the NBA and can win no matter what. His leadership skills are great because he can still lead a team to greatness even though the team has nothing left to prove.

Role Model;

Steve Kerr is always polite and well mannered in interviews and post game conferences. he pays respect to his opponents win or loss meaning he shows respect to everyone no matter what and has never been involved in any drama around the team.

Trainer;

Even though his team has nothing to prove, they still improve every season. This shows how good of a trainer Steve Kerr is. He improves the players around his by advising them what to improve upon and helps them do it.

Friend;

Steve Kerr is all the players boss but that doesn’t mean he cant be friendly towards them as well. He is a friend of all the players he has coached and helps them out of basketball as well. An example of this is Javale Mcgee, even though he left the Golden State Warriors in 2018, Steve Kerr and Javale Mcgee still speak to each other and still pay respect to each other.

Jeff Fenech – Mike Tyson – Boxing

Jeff Fenech trained and coached one of the best boxers of all time, Mike Tyson. He helped Tyson improve as the fights went by and taught him the basics of fighting in the ring. Mike Tyson has said himself that without Jeff Fenech, he wouldn’t have become the youngest champion of all time if not even a champion in his whole career. Jeff Fenech showed the responsibility of not letting Tyson get hurt by teaching him his signature style of moving his head at all times so it was hard to hit him, he also showed this responsibility when Tyson was too hurt to fight so he had the fights stopped. His main skills were problem solving and communication, he did this by watching Tyson mid fight from ring side and then telling him what he is doing wrong and right between rounds.

Organisation;

Jeff Fenech had good organisation over what Mike Tyson trained on and on what his diet was. This shows good organisation because for certain opponents he had to train for certain things, this shows in how many wins Mike Tyson has.

Communication;

In every fight of Mike Tyson’s career Jeff Fenech always told him what he was doing right and wrong in between rounds. This shows good communication because whilst the fight is happening he could tell Mike Tyson what the best way to win against his opponent was.

Problem Solving;

Jeff Fenech also showed good problem solving skills in between rounds, an example of this is in between rounds he would tell Mike Tyson how to exploit his opponents weaknesses and win over them.

Health & Safety;

Towards the end of Mike Tyson’s career Jeff Fenech had to worry about the health and safety of Mike Tyson because he was getting beat in most of his fights, when he saw that Mike could not fight anymore he threw the towel in and stopped the fight before Mike got seriously injured.

Equal Opportunities;

Jeff Fenech let Mike Tyson take any fight he wanted at the start and the end of his career. He always believed in Mike and always gave him the opportunity to fight anyone he wanted.

Professional Standards;

Even though Mike Tyson wasn’t that professional during his career Jeff Fenech was, he always gave respect when it was due and tried to keep Mike as professional as he could.

Following The Rules;

Jeff Fenech taught Mike Tyson to always follow the rules no matter what, and Mike listened to him until to the end of career when Mike had a lot going on in his personal life.

Leadership;

Jeff Fenech helped Mike Tyson become one of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport. He did this by showing Mike he was someone to respect and follow and if he did they could achieve great things.

Role Model;

Through out the time of training and coaching Mike Tyson, Jeff Fenech always tried to be a role model towards him and show him decent morals and it worked until the end of his career.

Trainer;

Jeff Fenech taught Mike Tyson the basics of boxing, he also taught him his signature style of moving his head so he was hard to hit because of this, he is now thought of on of the best boxers of all time and some people call him the best. He trained Mike to his strengths and also turned his weaknesses into strengths. An example of this is how Mike Tyson is only six foot in the heavyweight division which is usually dominated by people over 6 foot 4, but because he trained Mike Tyson to embrace his height this lead to him being the youngest ever heavyweight champion.

Friend;

To this day 13 years after Mike Tyson has retired they still have a relationship and speak to each other. This shows what it takes to be a good trainer/coach is that you also have to be a good friend towards your players. If Jeff and Mike didn’t have such a good friendship then they wouldn’t have gotten as far as they did together.

What Makes a Good Coach / Manager ?

Every good coach/manager have things in common, an example of this is how Sir Alex Ferguson and Steve Kerr are both good at playing to their teams strength and are also good role models. This is important because if a team plays to their strengths then they will likely succeed because they are good at what they’re doing. It is also important to be a role model to your players because they need to respect you and want to do what you say. Another responsibility good managers and coaches need to possess is equal opportunities. Steve Kerr and Sir Alex Ferguson are exceptional at this by rotating their team sheet every game and letting everyone get the same play time on the field. Probably the most important role for a coach/manager is being a friend. Every successful manager in the history of sports has been a good friend to the sportsmen they are managing/coaching, this is because you want the sports people to feel comfortable around you and not be scared of asking you for anything.
